The mission of Destination Rapid City is to foster Downtown Rapid City through economic development, creating a vibrant business district rich in appeal for the Rapid City community and its visitors.

  • Received passage of the Downtown Business Improvement District with the majority of property owners signing in support, a public vote that passed the BID and unanimous approval by City Council
  • Awarded the position of operations and management services for Main Street Square by the BID Board
  • Successfully completed Main Street Square
  • Added nine downtown kiosks for local promoting with a downtown map
  • Established the Downtown Clean Team
  • Assisted in the planning and promotion of events downtown such as the Independence Day Celebration, Cruiser Car Show, the Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival, and more. These events attract thousands to our city center each year and put our downtown on display while improving the quality of life for our citizens
  • Created a downtown tourist map in conjunction with Visit Rapid City
  • Worked with the Department of Transportation to add additional downtown signage off of I-90 and the belt loop around Rapid City
  • Secured billboard space on I-90 and near the airport directing people to the downtown area
  • Secured metered long-term parking in the parking ramp on the first level for convenient customer shopping Downtown
  • Launched Partners in Progress in 2010 for long-term community development
  • Installed pedestrian-safe crossings on stop lights
  • Installed wayfinding signs for pedestrians in the Downtown area


Our 2020 Vision

  • Work with local businesses to keep and ensure a critical mix of business
  • Extend Downtown beautification with more benches, flowers and additional lighting
  • Focus on the creation of silent train crossing through the Downtown area
  • Implement a historic storefront facade improvement program with matching grant
  • Strive for an effective transportation system and easy access from interstate hotels to the Downtown area with a Downtown shuttle
  • Work closely with Main Street Square staff and the Rapid City Downtown Business Group to develop events and activities that promote the local heritage, culture, art, entertainment to make Downtown a destination for both locals and visitors
  • Create new Downtown holiday lighting
  • Work closely with investors to bring healthy, comfortable, upscale living spaces in Downtown
  • Create an environment that promotes work/live loft spaces
  • Work closely with city administration for planning on additional parking, improving Downtown streets and enhancing corner nodes
  • Make our Downtown and region more desirable to attract a higher quality candidate and workforce to Rapid City
  • Work closely with the School of Mines and Parks and Recreation Department for connectivity of a bike path to the Downtown area
  • Attract professional service businesses to establish downtown as a central area for all customer needs through an advanced outreach marketing program
  • Assist in attracting professional services creating a corridor from Downtown to the School of Mines
  • Work closely in assisting the performing arts with the Rapid City Arts Council at the Dahl
  • Create more Downtown gathering areas
